"Site Specificity and the Problematics of Public Art" is an interdisciplinary study of the concept of the "site" and site specificity at the intersection of art and architecture/urbanism. Recent forms of "new genre public art" are seen to have displaced a number of traditional assumptions about the identity of urban space and the role of artists and architects.

520 # $a The first chapter traces a genealogy of site specificity from its phenomenological basis in Minimalism, to its socio-political implications in Institutional Critique, to its discursive determination in recent project-based art. The second chapter addresses questions concerning originality, authenticity, uniqueness, authorship, and criticality (as translated through the specificity of the site) in relation to the reproduction and traveling of older site-specific art and the changing status of the artist and the art object in nomadic, "service"-oriented art of the 1990s.
520 # $a The next two chapters present an in-depth study of Chicago's 1993 city-wide public art program "Culture in Action" in which the traditional identity of the artist, architect, and site are all displaced by the "community." Chapter Four outlines the relationship between the changing definitions of the site and the concept of "publicness" in public art discourse since the mid-1960s, contextualizing the recent transformation of site specificity into community specificity as exemplified in "Culture in Action." The final chapter details the divergent ways in which this "community" is conceived and/or constituted in new genre public art, which attempts to redefine the role of art and architecture to intervene more effectively in the spatial politics and urban processes of the city.
520 # $a The third chapter asks "what is the site of architecture?" to consider site specificity in architectural terms. Through an analysis of Kenneth Frampton's theory of Critical Regionalism, developed through the 1980s, this chapter explores site specificity as a dialectical mediation in built form between the placelessness of universal civilization and the particularities of local place-bound cultures. The chapter also addresses the prejudices and paradoxes of Critical Regionalism and the extent to which it serves as a theory of disciplinary autonomy.
