Findings and conclusions. The basic result of this research is that service inputs are different from other inputs which may be added in fixed-proportions to form a durable good system. By revealing the uniqueness of service inputs, this study explains how restrictive aftermarket practices cause substitution away from fast, time-sensitive service in favor of slower service. This substitution effect represents a key distortion that can result in large efficiency losses for the economy. Original manufacturers of durable goods should not be allowed to engage in restraints which foreclose aftermarket service competition.

Scope and method of study. The purpose of this study is to critically evaluate recent economic research and court decisions on antitrust policy in manufactured goods aftermarkets and to add to this research. Aftermarkets refer to markets for goods and services related to a manufactured good that has been purchased previously. The principal problem in manufactured goods aftermarkets occurs when durable equipment manufacturers drive out (foreclose) competition in related markets (aftermarkets) for spare parts, service, etc. Although aftermarket competition is a relatively new antitrust concern, many researchers have studied the welfare effects of restrictive business policies in aftermarkets and controversies have arisen. The ultimate goal of this study is to create a more complete framework of analysis for evaluating aftermarket service competition. This framework would be useful in formulating public policies that promote social welfare maximization.
