The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of a psychoeducational video designed to increase awareness about sexual abuse and the common process of victimization on both counseling and law students' attributions of responsibility toward both the victim of sexual abuse and the perpetrator. This study focused on blame attributions in sexual abuse and examined the implications of educating the student through the Elaboration Likelihood Model (Petty & Cacioppo, 1986) about the victimization process of child sexual abuse.

This study utilized a vignette instrument adapted from Broussard and Wagner (1988) describing extrafamilial sexual abuse between a 15-year-old male and an adult male. The effect of victim response on the law and counseling students' attributions of responsibility toward the victim and perpetrator was investigated. Using the vignette instrument, attribution of responsibility and perceived harm of abuse was examined from two perspectives (a) children who responded to sexual abuse in an encouraging manner, and (b) children who responded to abuse in a passive manner.

Using an alpha level of .05 for statistical significance, results indicated (a) differences in attributions of responsibility made toward the victim between students who had viewed the video compared to those who had not, (b) a significant 2-way interaction between group (treatment vs. control) and program (law vs. counseling), (c) a difference between counseling and law students in the perceived harm of sexual abuse on the victim, and (d) a difference in attributions of responsibility made toward the child based on victim response.
