Thesis (M.A.)--University of Southern California, 2001.
Day labor is a growing segment of the informal sector. The increase in day laborers has become apparent in places where unskilled labor is demanded and where large proportions of immigrants reside. This study explores the social and economic impacts of day laborers in Southern California using data from the Day Labor Research Institute and results from the Day Labor Survey conducted by Abel Valenzuela, Jr. Previously held myths are dispelled, existing solutions toward the mitigation of day labor impacts are discussed, and the day labor center is proposed as a comprehensive solution to the overarching problem, identified in this study as a power imbalance between day laborers and their solicitors. Under certain conditions, the day labor center increases the bargaining power of day laborers and makes the day labor market more profitable for day laborers and less threatening to stakeholders.
