Jury decision making in a rape trial :
The influence of victim-perpetrator relationship and victim attractiveness.[electronic resource] - 62 p.
Major Professor: Kristine M. Jacquin.
Thesis (M.S.)--Mississippi State University, 2002.
The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of victim attractiveness and her relationship to the offender on jury decision making in a rape trial. Participants were recruited from psychology classes and completed the following measures: Rape Myth Acceptance Scale, Attitudes Toward Women Scale, Crowne-Marlowe Social Desirability Scale, Bem Sex Role Inventory, and the Acceptance of Interpersonal Violence Scale. Next, participants read a summary of evidence, were shown a photograph of the victim, and were told the relationship of the offender to the victim. Finally, participants made a verdict and if applicable, sentenced the defendant. The data were examined with a between-subject analysis of covariance. Acceptance of interpersonal violence was a significant predictor of jury decisions. Neither victim attractiveness nor relationship to the victim was related to jury decisions.
