The leadership styles of two crime family bosses in Philadelphia—Angelo Bruno (1960 through 1980) and Nicodemo Scarfo (1980 through 1986)—are analyzed through classifying raw data into a leadership style typology. The data analyzed came from both primary and secondary sources. The secondary source consisted of prior scholarly research on the Bruno era of organized crime in Philadelphia. The primary source data was related to the Scarfo crime family era and consisted of various items, including legal transcripts, law enforcement memorandums, electronic eavesdropping logs, surveillance logs, informant debriefings, and other legal documents. The effect and impact of leadership style on the operation and structure of the Philadelphia crime family are viewed through events that occurred, including acts of violence, defection of members as government witnesses, prosecutions, deaths, and other significant events affecting the crime family. The detailed analysis of information coming from insiders of the crime family provides first hand and actual experience.

The main research question in the study inquires as to the significant impact upon the outcome and goals of criminal organizational families as a result of the exercise of certain discreet leadership styles within those families. The study shows how both families received benefits and cost because of the leadership styles they adopted. The research question came first but the Bruno family existed virtually violence free and profitably until Bruno's death by virtue of the normative and utilitarian leadership styles. In contrast, the Scarfo family was involved in serious violence, turning of informants, and prosecutions that destroyed the enterprise because of the ways they adapted to the leadership style.
