Due to the nature of this study, an ethnographic research approach is used. Because of financial limitations, a criteria non-random sample of fifteen couples was attained through personal and professional contacts. E-mail survey and follow-up home visits were also used to investigate how husbands and wives use their home based worker resources, i.e., time and space, as capital.

However, there is a contrasting assumption that, computer home based work is just another “sweatshop industry,” that ought to be regulated or banned. According to this belief, computer home based male workers benefit more than computer home based female workers, particularly, if there are children, elders or disabled persons, who require care within the home. But, it is also said that this sort of work disproportionately benefits employers, since it reduces fringe benefits and easily leads to piece-work.

Results from this study are specific to the “criteria sample” and may not be generalizable to other types of computer home based workers. However, this information may still be used by public policy-makers, corporate decision-makers, work and family theorists and families who fit the research criteria and are considering computer home based work or starting a computer home based business.

The purpose of this study is to explore the socioeconomic impact of computer home based work on dual income husbands and wives and their family members. Apart from addressing the omissions of earlier computer home based work studies, which mainly focused on female heads of households or professional males, this research focuses on married couples who work in the home and have a dependent family member(s) (child, parent or disabled person) living with them.

This type of work appears to offer an ideal alternative to the unemployed, and to men and women wishing to spend more time with their families. For women, it can mean being worker, mother and wife in the same place. For men, it can mean not only being a worker, but also taking on a stronger role as father and husband.
