Thesis (Ph.D.)--Arizona State University, 2002.
The design of built environments has a direct impact on the natural environment and quality of life, yet little attention has been given to ecological design education (EDE) in either environmental education (EE) or design education (DE), the two principal content areas of EDE. Environmental education is often lacking an emphasis on the importance of built environments, and design education is often lacking ecological awareness. EDE is defined as education regarding the relationship between built and natural environments, and how to design built environments to protect environmental and human health. EDE bridges EE and DE, and although currently limited in practice, is being provided through a variety of educational approaches in formal and non-formal education for both the general public and design professionals. There is a need to understand the types of programs that exist and the successfulness of the content and teaching approaches to assist in creating or enhancing EDE.

This research examined EDE to identify general types, content, teaching approaches, successes, and limitations, with the goal of characterizing the three principal types of EDE (within EE, within DE and stand-alone EDE); and to assess the success of EDE content and teaching methods. The research methods included a survey of environmental, design, and ecological design education programs to obtain information on existing EDE. Three case studies were conducted of EDE to provide additional information regarding the status and quality of EDE today. The information obtained through the survey, case studies, and the literature review was utilized to develop an EDE typology and recommendations for enhancing EDE.
