Thesis (J.C.D.)--The Catholic University of America, 2002.
At several important junctures during the past half-century, ecclesiastical authorities have requested criteria for discerning the nature and purpose of associations of the faithful in the Church. In his 1988 apostolic exhortation, Christifideles laici, Pope John Paul II answers these requests with what he terms “criteria of ecclesiality.” After stating that the remarkable growth of associations of the faithful heralds a new era in the Church, the pontiff offers five criteria for discerning their authenticity: the primacy of the call to holiness, profession of the Catholic faith, communion with the pope and the diocesan bishop and esteem for all forms of the Church's apostolate, participation in the mission of the Church, and a committed presence in human society.

Since the publication of Christifideles laici, ecclesiastical authorities have continued to request further development of these criteria. It is in light of this ongoing process and the importance of this topic in the contemporary Church that this dissertation offers a systematic analysis of the theological and canonical foundations for the criteria of ecclesiality for associations of the faithful. Chapter one analyzes the history of ecclesiastical legislation on associations prior to Vatican II, a history that culminated in the 1917 Code of Canon Law. Chapters two and three consider the primary fontes for the criteria of ecclesiality: the documents of the Second Vatican Council and the canons of the 1983 Code of Canon Law. The final chapter then examines the five criteria of ecclesiality present in Christifideles laici, within the context of the many synods of bishops and episcopal conferences that have addressed this issue, as well as several international meetings sponsored by the Pontifical Council for the Laity. Finally, the dissertation identifies several areas in which the development of these criteria might continue.
