Essay One: Does Democracy Increase Crime? The relationship between democracy and crime has yet to be investigated. This paper shows that democracy is associated with increases in minor offenses, but decreases in serious offenses such as homicide. This finding is robust across different data sets and estimation methods. Evidences also suggests it is democracy per se rather than transition or political instability that cause the finding. By using prison length, clearance rates, and prisoners per crime as measures of deterrence, I find that deterrence can explain approximately 40% of democracy's effect on crime.

Essay Two: The internal Labor Markets of Company X. Internal labor markets have too many theories but too few facts because firm-base datasets are not available. In this paper, a complete internal data set of a Taiwanese firm is analyzed. Job title, authority level, and the hierarchy structure chart of the company are used to identify levels. I find that hierarchies are simple, and job transition paths are steady over time, but different across worker's types. I also show that compensation and salaries are attached to jobs and levels, and types of workers also affect earnings because of the signaling and information problem. However, levels can't explain bonuses after removing the personal fixed effect. Education has a mixed effect on earning, depending on what type of worker you are. A primary test shows that the tournament effect exists in this firm. Ports of entry and exit exist, and they are concentrated in lower hierarchy of the firm. The firing policy is used as an example to show the interplay between culture, internal labor markets, and other economic reasons. Finally, I show that the change of external labor market conditions would not affect the mean, but the variance of the compensation and the total employment.
