Cluster analysis was performed to identify the patterns of disability, which were present. Three patterns emerged which were then compared based on the presence of environmental barriers that impacted performance. The first group consisted of individuals with moderate motor impairments. The second group included individuals who had severe motor impairments. The third group was a mild general impairment group who had motor and sensory impairments. There were different patterns of environmental support that were present in each of the three clusters.

The patterns of environmental elements that emerged are valuable tools for designers. They provide an increased understanding of the patterns of environmental support individuals with disabilities need to perform daily activities in the home.

The study used a sample drawn from a database of a medical equipment company. The random sample of 1,000 Missouri and Illinois individuals with disabilities was drawn in October of 1997. Each individual received a 14 page survey that asked the respondents to describe the environmental barriers and supports that were present in their homes. A response rate of 43 percent was achieved and 327 surveys were retained for final analysis. Descriptive data, Reintegration to Normal Living, and a disability composite were also obtained.
