This dissertation describes scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements of Bi based high temperature superconductors, primarily Bi2 Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. Measurements of the local density of states with atomic resolution were obtained. The measurements show that the electronic structure varies on a nanometer scale. The variation is extreme, in some cases yielding apparently non-superconducting (though still gapped) densities of states. The density of states is also found to vary on similar length scales around adatoms, as is expected for strongly scattering point defects in d-wave superconductors. Finally, periodic modulations of the local density of states are found. In particular, a modulation with a period four times the copper-copper separation is found in the absence of magnetic field.
