The D6-symmetric propeller, hexakis[4 '-(pentaphenylphenyl)biphenyl-4-yl)-benzene (C294H 198) and its bromo and methoxy derivatives were prepared in a four-step synthesis from hexakis(4-iodophenyl)benzene via palladium-catalyzed coupling and Diels-Alder reactions. Similarly, hexakis(2',3 ',4',5',6' -pentaphenylbiphenyl-4-yl)benzene (C258H174) and hexakis[4'-(2,3,4,5-tetraphenylphenyl)biphenyl-4-yl]benzene (C258H174) were prepared in short and efficient syntheses. Two C3-symmetric propellers, 1,3,5-tris[4 '-(pentaphenylphenyl)biphenyl-4-yl]benzene (C150H 102) and 1,3,5-tris[4'-pentaphenylphenyl)biphenyl-4-yl]-2,4,6-triphenylbenzene (C168H114), were prepared via cobalt-catalyzed trimerization of unsymmetric acetylene precursors.

520 # $a The palladium-catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction between 1,2-bis(4-bromo-phenyl)-3,4,5,6-hexaphenylbenzene and the corresponding hexaphenylbenzene bis(boronic acid) gave a mixture of linear and cyclic oligomers of hexaphenylbenzene containing two to six hexaphenylbenzene subunits. An X-ray crystal structure of the tetrameric oligomer showed it to be a polyphenylene macrocycle (C168H112). Two other dimeric and trimeric polyphenylene macrocycles were prepared in similar syntheses. Starting from coprostanone, a steroid with a cis A/B ring fusion, the basis for a new class of enantioselective hosts has been established. The trimerization of coprostanone by TiCl4/ZnCl2 gave the aromatic "tristeroid" (C81H132), a C3-symmetric hydrocarbon that, according to X-ray analysis, contains a deep, chiral cleft.
