In the first essay, I explore the determinants of individual participation in NARE. As a contribution to previous literature, I explore the role of the neighborhood characteristics as well as of neighbors choices and attributes on this decision. I find that neighbors participation in this sector has a significant impact on the individual choice of occupation, even after controlling for regional employment opportunities. Moreover, neighbors choices are more important for groups that are less likely to participate in NARE on the basis of their own and contextual characteristics, such as women, indigenous people, the elderly, and land-owners.

In the third essay, I explore the impact of NARE on poverty. I find a negative effect of manufacturing and services employment on poverty. In addition, the contexts where NARE is more pro-poor are those characterized by low income inequality, high value of local agricultural output, and high government expenditures. When looking at the effectiveness of policy interventions in reducing poverty through NARE, I find that interventions in education and in roads that promote the growth of NARE are important.

Non-agricultural rural employment (NARE) grew faster than agricultural employment in Latin America for the past three decades, introducing changes into rural economies and labor markets. The three essays explore different aspects of NARE in Mexico. The major contribution with respect to previous literature on the subject is the introduction of the contextual dimension into individual-level and aggregate analysis, in measuring how it effectively affects economic outcomes of individuals and of municipalities.

The second essay explores the determinants of the growth of NARE in semi urban and rural municipalities during the 1990s. I look at four types of determinants of manufacturing and services employment growth: own municipal attributes, connectedness to the surroundings, proximity to urban centers, and the geographical context. I find that proximity to centers of economic activity is crucial for manufacturing and services, but more important for the former. I also find that, in isolated municipalities, services NARE depends importantly on own municipal attributes and connectedness.
