The dissertation concludes that Swift's financial writing marks a moment in the history of Anglo-Irish hegemony when the Anglican confessional state was gradually being secularized and replaced by a "Republic of Debt"---an Anglo-Irish public who influenced Vice-Regal policy by lending money to the state.

This dissertation examines Jonathan Swift's economic satires of the 1720s by exploring the impact of the English Financial Revolution and South Sea Bubble on eighteenth-century Irish culture. It encompasses a range of interventions into current studies of the period, country, genre, and author. First, it attempts to transform what emerged in the 1990s as the "new economic criticism" about the effects of paper credit upon British print culture, hermeneutics, and concepts of value by giving it a postcolonial, and specifically Irish Studies, focus. Second, this study of the Irish colonial context for paper money revises previous economic histories of Ireland in the decade after the South Sea Bubble. Third, this primary documentary research on monetary practices of the period informs my reading of the Irish financial satires of Swift and others, helping to make possible a critique of them as texts denigrating some prints and securities in the market while constructing others as normative. Fourth, these historicist interpretations lead me to understand Swift not as the patriotic symbol for the "Whole People of Ireland," as the fourth of his Drapier's Letters suggests, but rather as a writer who embodied the author function for an imagined public limited in scope to a nation of his colonialist Irish Anglican caste. This work claims that Augustan satire, while inscribing itself in a market of print information even as it rails against print culture's sublime excess of signification, invents the eighteenth century's distinctions between the "imaginary" and the "real," "nominal value" and "intrinsic value," and the public and the private spheres.
