Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 2003.
This dissertation explores the historical relationship between tragedy and skepticism in the seventeenth century. Early modern skepticism possessed a psychological dimension that has since disappeared from modern philosophy, and I suggest that it can therefore provide a window into the aesthetic experiences offered by tragedy. My first chapter examines the influence of Luther's painful self-doubt upon Doctor Faustus and Macbeth. My second chapter looks at the relationship between Julius Caesar and Hamlet and the therapeutic blend of Academic Skepticism and Stoicism disseminated in late sixteenth-century consolation manuals. My third chapter explores the importance of Hobbes' skepticism about reason to the heroic drama of the Restoration, especially The Indian Emperor. My fourth and final chapter ties together the themes of the first three by looking at Dryden's use of Cartesian solipsism to revise Shakespearean tragedy. Ultimately, I suggest that a general movement from inward-looking to externally-directed doubt over the course of the century helped produce a shift from the introspective tragedy of the Elizabethan and Jacobean period to the theater of motion popularized in the Restoration.
