In this dissertation, we examine the politics of language and nation in the context of contemporary Catalonia. We begin by creating a map of the social bases of support for Catalan nationalism. We continue by tracing the genesis and evolution of the discursive repertoires of the main parties operating in the territory. We then turn to give a detailed account of the formation and passage of the policies of "linguistic normalization" and "national reconstruction;" and we proceed to evaluate these policies from a variety of perspectives, starting from the standpoint of democratic theory, followed from the standpoint of constitutional theory, and finally from the standpoint of liberal egalitarianism. In the process, we identify a dialectical dynamic of "recognition" and "mis-recognition" at work. Specifically, we demonstrate that the persistent push for the "recognition" of the Catalan "nation" vis-a-vis the Spanish State has been protagonized by specific actors organically-linked to specific, privileged strata of the population there rather than by the "collective subject" as such; and generally, we stress the extent to which the discourse of language and nation can and has functioned to legitimate existing constellations of social power relations within Catalonia itself. Furthermore, we also emphasize that these demands for "recognition" in and/or against Spain have been consistently complemented by a tenacious refusal to "recognize" the existence of ethno-linguistic diversity within Catalonia itself, much less the systematic pairing of such patterns of diversity with patterns of socio-economic stratification. Finally, we conclude by sketching the complex ways in which "cultural" aspirations for achieving "linguistic normalization" and for strengthening "national consciousness" have been intertwined with other, "territorial" aspirations for attaining higher levels of autonomy within the current asymmetrically federal system, and/or even "self-determination." In so doing, we show that the "cultural" politics of "nation-building" within Catalonia can and have functioned to legitimate a broader "state-building" project as well.
