The phenomena of "national self-determination" and "globalization" have too often been defined in multiple and inconsistent ways that undermine their analytical purchase. Exploring and evaluating the conceptual terrain behind their diverse meanings can facilitate examination of the relationship between them, specifically the effects of globalization on emerging conceptions of national self-determination. As a vehicle for pursuing this inquiry, Rogers Brubaker's acclaimed "triadic nexus" of nationalism provides a rich and suggestive theoretical framework. Brubaker's nexus involves a "dynamic interdependence" among three "fields": a newly emergent "nationalizing state," an ethnocultural or "national minority" residing within it, and an external "national homeland" state of the expatriate "national minority." In applying his framework to the "locus classicus" of national self-determination in post-Cold War Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, Brubaker predicted a downward spiral of conflict and potentially explosive violence resulting from the interaction among the three fields of his triad. Employing theoretically and historically informed understandings of both national self-determination and globalization, this study posits that Brubaker's theorizing is insufficient for explaining the lack of violent conflict in post-Soviet Estonia---a state with a large Russian-speaking minority, whose interaction with Estonia and the Russian Federation represents a paradigmatic example of the triadic nexus. Through an examination of the intricacies of the nexus as it operated in Estonia, the lack of explanatory power in Brubaker's theorizing can be attributed to the absence of an essential fourth field---globalization---as manifested through the regional process of "Europeanization" and subdivided into three "clusters of globalization phenomena" involving political/economic, normative, and technological/cultural elements. The introduction of this external field into Brubaker's effectively insular and self-contained nexus broadens the institutional repertoire available for contemporary expressions of national-self-determination in Estonia. Selectively appropriating key elements of Brubaker's model, particularly regarding the interaction within and among fields based on the philosophical insights of Pierre Bourdieu, and adding a fourth field of globalization, allows for the construction of a solid conceptual platform from which to mount a more theoretically sound and empirically expansive inquiry into the evolving nature of national self-determination in the 21st century.
