Enthusiasm over the successes of nonrelativistic calculations using effective nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials has been diluted by several significant discrepancies between theory and experiment. Perhaps the most marked of these inconsistencies include the triton binding energy defect, the vector analyzing power puzzle in nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering, and the star anomaly in neutron-deuteron (nd) breakup. This dissertation is impelled by the last of these discrepancies.

The kinematical arrangements under scrutiny in the present work are known as the star configurations. These are the configurations in which the momentum vectors of the three exit-channel particles are equal in magnitude and separated by 120° in the center-of-mass reference frame. The plane defined by these three vectors may take any orientation with respect to the line defined by the incident neutron beam. When the plane is perpendicular to the incident beam axis, the configuration is referred to as the space star. When the plane coincides with the incident beam axis, the configuration is called the coplanar star. Any configuration between these two extremes is known as an intermediate star. Previous measurements of the space-star cross section at 10.3 MeV, 13.0 MeV, 16.0 MeV, and 25.0 MeV have yielded cross-section data that are more than two standard deviations above theoretical predictions, with the largest of these discrepancies at 13.0 MeV. However, measurements of the coplanar-star cross section at 13.0 MeV and 16.0 MeV are in reasonably good agreement with calculation. The discrepancy between data and theoretical calculations of the cross sections for nd breakup in the space-star configuration has been named the star anomaly. The question of how a 90° spatial rotation in the nd center-of-mass reference frame can put theory and experiment at odds lies at the heart of the star anomaly.

To advance the study of the star anomaly, new measurements of the space-star cross sections at 10.3 and 13.0 MeV were performed at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) using a new detector array which was designed to enable greater control over systematic uncertainties and higher statistical accuracy than in previous measurements. Coplanar-star cross sections were also measured at this energy, with the 10.3-MeV measurement being the first of its kind. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
