Gilleland, Willis Todd.

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Princeton University, 2004.
There are three major thrusts of work that comprise the unique contributions of this dissertation. One is the derivation of an upper bound for the sedimentation of a dispersion. This closely follows previous work by Beasley and Torquato (Phys. Fluids A, 1989.) for the fluid permeability of a fixed bed, but in this work it is explicitly derived in terms of sedimentation with less restrictive boundary conditions motivated by the work of J. H. C. Luke (SIAM J. Appl. Math, 1993.). Second is the considerable extension of results for monodisperse suspensions with evaluation of the upper bound for charged and adhesive spheres. Third is the new derivation of a variational upper bound for the sedimentation velocity of a binary mixture. Further, the upper bound for binary sedimentation is evaluated in the special case of sedimentation of one population of hard spheres in the presence of neutrally buoyant neighbors.

We devise a theoretical technique to compute the average sedimentation velocity of a suspension consisting of either monodisperse spheres or a binary mixture of spheres. The technique uses rigorous variational bounds to approach the exact result through inclusion of critical micro-structural information in the form of the pair distribution function g( r) and single-particle hydrodynamics.
