My own research among the extraordinarily entrepreneurial Manang community residing in the Nyishang region of highland Nepal has revealed a similar combination of dynamics involved in this group's economic success. The Manang community's emergence as prominent international traders in the 1960s and re-emergence as flourishing tourism entrepreneurs in the 1990s can be primarily attributed to its members' recognition and aggressive pursuit of commercial opportunities, the accessibility within the group of capital for financing business ventures, and a local cultural and regulatory environment supporting competitive private enterprise.

Remote from population centers, roads, markets, and sources of capital, the inhabited areas of Nepal's Himalayan highlands are generally characterized by a low level of commercial activity. A few groups in highland Nepal, however, stand out noticeably due to the widespread involvement of their members in business ventures. This economic asymmetry is quite striking, particularly since the groups inhabiting Nepal's Himalayan highlands share a similar environmental and cultural milieu. Past scholars whose work has focused on highland groups in Nepal have debated the causes of this disparity. The resulting body of literature suggests that the economic success achieved by certain of Nepal's highland groups has been due to a combination of available commercial opportunities, a culture that encourages entrepreneurial activity, the availability of capital, and a lack of business-hindering regulatory restrictions and economic expropriation.

The widespread involvement and success in business ventures enjoyed by members of the Manang community during their entrepreneurial emergence and re-emergence can largely be attributed to certain social systems of economic cooperation developed by the group. Members have utilized to a varying degree at different times intra-community direct lending, business partnerships, and rotating credit associations to finance commercial ventures and a cartel-like association of business owners to regulate price-based competition. But while social norms advocating cooperation have been vital to the group's economic success, a culture facilitating widespread involvement in competitive private enterprise has been no less so. This dissertation describes the co-existence of communal cooperation and individual competition in Manang and suggests that maintaining a balance between these contrasting characteristics is instrumental to an entrepreneurial community's economic success.
