Glass is a widely used material, though how and why some materials form glass is still not understood. The last two decades witness the biggest breakthrough in the study of the glass transition, the mode coupling theory (MCT). Various experiments are performed to test MCT. We performed optical heterodyne detected optical Kerr effect experiments on several supercooled liquids. We found a nearly logarithmic decay at picoseconds that is missing in the earlier version MCT. This finding later was explained by Gotze and Sperl as a consequence of a strong translation rotation coupling, which intrigues a series of study of the dynamics behaviors in strongly coupled systems.

One unexpected finding in our experiments is the boson peak. It is originally observed in supercooled dibutyl-phthalate, and later on in supercooled aspirin, salol and otp. We found that the boson peak is well described by MCT Sjogren's model. Similar to the nearly logarithmic relaxation, it is a consequence of a strong translation-rotation coupling near the MCT critical temperature T C.

We also performed OHD-OKE experiments on liquid crystals. We found the short time dynamics in the isotropic phase liquid crystal is very similar to that of supercooled liquids. We conjugate that the MCT mechanism governing the short time dynamics in the isotropic phase of liquid crystals. We saw signatures of "two ideal glass transitions" in the liquid crystals. We construct a MCT model that can reproduce the "two glass transitions" as observed. We believe that there should be a theory that can describe the dynamics of supercooled liquids and that in the isotropic phase liquid crystals on an equal footing.
