New organic and inorganic materials for nanocrystal solar cells are reported with descriptions and basic characterization of their applicability. Brief background is presented regarding the fundamental operation of nanocrystal-polymer solar cells as context for the body of this work. New colloidal nanocrystals synthesized for solar cells include CdTe tetrapods for improved light absorption and electron transport, and Type II core/shell nanocrystals to reduce the charge carrier recombination rate. Related materials, branched and linear nanocrystal heterostructures may find application in photo-voltaics, nanoelectronics, and quantum information processing among other fields. A new class of organic materials, electroactive surfactants, is reported which can enhance the nanocrystal-polymer interaction and provide a model system for investigating organic-nanocrystal charge transfer. Finally, some preliminary materials integration strategies for next generation nanocrystal solar cells are discussed that can exploit the properties of these various new materials.
