AGG, like Tain Bo Cuailnge and other Ulster sagas, presents its protagonist Cu Chulainn as impetuous and bellicose, but it differs from most other tales by depicting him as ultimately amenable to reason and moderation. This characterisation, together with themes of sexual propriety and regal-martial co-operation, provides the main thematic focus of the tale, which presents what is perhaps a monastically-inspired prescription for harmonious social relations and security of province and nation.

Chapter II offers an intertextual approach to AGG, which bristles with references to other early Irish tales, particularly Tain Bo Cuailnge, the centrepiece of the Ulster cycle. I explore the validity of using the modern critical notion of intertextuality for interpreting medieval Irish literary works, suggesting some modifications to render it a more appropriate critical tool for medieval literature. Not entirely without reason, medievalists are sometimes resistant to the use of tools from modern literary theory, and this dissertation attempts to bridge that gap in a modest way.

In chapter I, an evaluation of the saga in terms of literary genre, I examine AGG in relation to the generic framework of early Irish literature. I survey medieval and modern approaches to early Irish literary genres, and try to identify the bases of modern scholars' generic approaches. The applicability of modern genre theory to medieval Irish narrative literature is also considered.

The editorial component is the heart of this dissertation, but the tale is unusual in so many respects that to leave it to stand without close analysis would represent a serious failing. I undertake this analysis in chapters I and II, in which I present a detailed study of the saga in relation to its early Irish literary context.

This dissertation presents an edition and translation of Aided Guill meic Carbada ocus Aided Gairb Glinni Rigi (AGG) from both extant manuscripts, Trinity College Dublin MS. 1339 and National Library of Scotland Adv. MS. 72.1.40. The saga dates from the late Middle Irish period and belongs to the Ulster cycle of early Irish literature.
