26Al is the source of the first gamma-ray line observed in the Galaxy. It provides evidence of ongoing nucleosynthesis, and can potentially serve as a probe of nucleosynthesis in novae, supernovae, and massive stars. A better knowledge of the reaction rates involved in its creation and destruction will improve models of stellar production of 26Al and make it possible to compare the predictions of those models to observations, improving our knowledge of stellar evolution. The fate of 26A1 is complicated by its structure: the first excited state is an isomer (Jpi = 0+, t1/2 = 6.345 s) with a very much shorter beta-decay half-life than the ground state (Jpi = 5+, t1/2 = 7.4 x 105 y). Because the two states do not come into true thermal equilibrium, even at the high temperatures of astrophysical plasmas, it is necessary to treat the reactions involving the isomer separately from those involving the ground state. Up until now, however, there has been no experimental information on reactions involving the metastable state. This experiment represents the first data on the 26Al m(p,gamma)27Si reaction. We populated excited states in 27Si by means of the 27Al(3He,t) 27Si reaction, and observed the subsequent proton decays using a pair of position-sensitive silicon strip detectors which together covered 40% of the solid angle of the outgoing particles.

Decays to the ground, isomeric, and second excited states of 26Al were measured, and levels in 27Si that are resonances for 26Alg(p,gamma)27Si, 26Alm(p,gamma)27Si, and 26 Al*(p,gamma)27Si were identified. The consequences for reaction rates in astrophysical environments are discussed.
