- 84 p.
Adviser: Gary S. Becker.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 2006.
The epidemic of childhood obesity is not particular to American culture but has been shown in the literature to be a worldwide phenomenon typified by a substantial increase in the prevalence of obesity occurring within a short time span. Two commonly accepted explanations for this rise in obesity are an increase in calorie consumption and a shift in time allocations toward indolent activities at the expense of physical activities. This paper uses both diet recall data and time diary data in order to rigorously test these two hypotheses. The data reject blaming child obesity trends on diet, but empirical support is found linking the rise in obesity with increased video game and computer use.
