Thesis (Ph.D.)--Stanford University, 2006.
In recent years, there has been a strong research effort aimed at developing optical functionality that can be integrated on a silicon chip. Silicon-based all-optical switches, detectors, and Raman lasers have now been demonstrated. Silicon nanoparticles present a, robust and CMOS-compatible approach towards silicon-based optical devices. In this thesis, I will first discuss a new method for synthesizing silicon nanoparticles using CO2 laser irradiation of oxides supersaturated with silicon. Using this technique, nanoparticles can be grown with superior spatial and temporal control and with similar optical properties compared to traditional furnace anneals. The details of this method and a series of experiments characterizing the structural and optical properties of the synthesized nanocrystals are described.

In the second part of this thesis, an implementation of a fiber-pigtailed all-optical switch employing a silicon-nanocrystal-coated silica microsphere resonator is discussed. This switch benefits from the strong absorption of a pump beam by the silicon nanoparticles and from the high optical quality factor of the microsphere (Q = 5x105). The product of the switching peak power (3.4 muW) and the device's characteristic dimension (a diameter of 150 mum) is 5x10-1 Wm. This power-length product, an important figure of merit for fiber switches, is one of the lowest values reported.
