In the history of historical environment preservation in Taiwan, preservation of the culture of military dependents’ housing began at a relatively later stage. The nationwide implementation of military dependents’ housing reconstruction programs and the government’s goal to dismantle all military dependents’ housing by 2009 have propelled the movement toward preservation of the culture of military dependents’ housing. Many historical and cultural workers, cultural organizations, local organizations, NPOs, and even cultural departments of the government have been devoted to rescue of the culture, interpretation of cultural preservation, and development of strategies for managing cultural preservation. As the government policies, regulations, and theories regarding preservation of the culture of military dependents’ housing are still immature, will it be too early to discuss about management in the meantime? With a focus on how the movement toward preservation of the culture of military dependents’ housing was constituted, this study first built the framework of cultural preservation and the pattern of preservation movements. Later, this study discussed the issue about the unused space generated after reconstruction of military dependents’ housing. In this public opinion-oriented cultural preservation movement, what should be preserved? The physical buildings or the image of military dependents’ housing in our memory? Through document analysis, field survey, in-depth interview, this study attempted to explore the content and features of preservation of the culture of military dependents’ housing. By organizing the development of the preservation of this culture, this study expected to induce the implications of preserving the culture of military dependents’ housing.
