Formal democracy in Africa has done little to help the poor and under-privileged, or to protect the natural environment. Against this background, NGOs offer an alternative means of political influence. This book traces the emergence of NGOs, and looks at their distinctive qualities. It examines the impact of NGOs, both on African politics and on the world stage, where many key decisions affecting Africa are taken. Whilethe success of NGOs has been reasonable, their presence raises questions about the nature of contemporary democracy. Are self-appointed groups an adequate substitute for mass movements?
