Research has demonstrated that adolescent girls develop individual attributes through participation in sports (Erkut & Tracy, 2002; Sabo, Miller, Melnick, & Heywood, 2004). Relational-cultural theory and related research reveal the importance of relational skills, such as empathy, mutuality, and interpersonal connection for adolescent girls (Gilligan, 1982; Jordan, Kaplan, Miller, Stiver, & Surrey, 1991; J. B. Miller & Stiver, 1997). This study examined whether the complex interactions involved in team sport participation were associated with the development of relational skills for adolescent girls. The 66 participants in this cross-sectional study were female college students who completed a survey consisting of three Emotional Quotient Inventory subscales: Empathy, Social Responsibility, and Interpersonal Relationship; the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale; and a background questionnaire that included a survey with .10 questions inquiring about the perceived effects of sport participation. The only statistically significant relationship occurred between sociability and participation in team sports. Self-reported data yielded insight into how adolescent girls perceive sport participation to affect them. Based on Bandura's (1986) social cognitive theory and conversations with former athletes, there is reason to believe that their perceptions may subsequently develop into skills. This study contributes to the literature with its sociability finding and serves as a foundation for future research with its self-perception findings.
