Sustainable tourism and voluntourism has seen an increase in popularity in recent years. This increase is in response to the need for an alternative to mass tourism that has, in many cases, negative impacts environmentally as well as culturally. Voluntourism is seen in a positive light as a sustainable form of travel combining adventure, altruism, environmental, cultural and personal enhancement. This research explores the motivations of the voluntourist through self-administered questionnaires that were collected in Ginosar, Israel as well as post-travel group interview and supplemental questionnaires. The study suggests that the main motivation for voluntourist who volunteer with the Bethsaida Excavations Project is adventure. These findings indicating a potential to structure the project in a way to better accommodate the voluntourist thus insuring a productive and fulfilling experience for both the volunteer and the project.
