The purposes of this study were to determine whether most of the Chinese elite swimming athletes could improve their swimming time and to investigate the barriers and benefits of training outside China. A qualitative method was applied for this study. A total of six individuals (three female and three male) participated in this study. The participants' average age was 22.83 years. The average practice year was 16 years. The average time for which the participants have participated in oversea training was three. All the participants have experience of participating in Olympic Games. Additionally, all the participants were medal winners in Chinese national swimming competitions, and even a few of them were international swimming competition medal winners. After the researcher analyzed the data, 34 different nuggets emerged based on similar statement and participants' perception. Most of the nuggets fell into six lower order themes; (a) motivation that the participants always trained very hard and the goal to improve swimming was consistent, (b) coaches' role that Chinese coaches' role changed based on different situation in order to support the participants, (c) social support that the participants gained much support from Chinese coaches, teammates, parents, (d) advanced coaching that the participant received more advanced training though training outside China, (e) food that a comparison of food in Australia and food in China, and (f) training environment that a comparison of training environment in Australia and training environment in China. Finally, a new theory, National Investment, emerged based on the lower order themes. National support simply means that Chinese government did everything that they could do to support Chinese elite athletes because China believed that elite sport could build a strong national mage on the international stage.
