Introduction: Rapid Urbanization and Urban Food Deserts; Jane Battersby, Jonathan Crush -- Chapter 1: Urban Agriculture and Food Insecurity in Southern African Cities; Bruce Frayne, Cameron McCordic & Helena Shilomboleni -- Chapter 2: Supermarket Growth and Food Access; Jane Battersby & Stephen Peyton -- Chapter 3: Supermarkets and the Urban Food Supply; Jonathan Crush & Mary Caesar -- Chapter 4: Levels of Household Food Insecurity in Secondary Cities; Benjamin Acquah, Stephen Kapunda & Alexander Legwegoh -- Chapter 5: Food Insecurity, Poverty and the Informal Economy; Ines Raimundo, Cameron McCordic and Jonathan Crush -- Chapter 6: Food Poverty and Insecurity in Urban Slums; Blessing Mberu et al -- Chapter 7: Gender, Food Security and Mobility; Liam Riley & Belinda Dodson -- Chapter 8: Migration as a Driver of Food Insecurity; Wade Pendleton, Jonathan Crush & Ndeyapo Nickanor -- Chapter 9: Food Insecurity in a State of Crisis; Godfrey Tawodzera -- Chapter 10: Food-Based Social Protection; Daniel Tevera & Nomcebo Simelane -- Chapter 11: Wild Food Consumption and Urban Food Security; Lauren Sneyd -- Chapter 12: Emerging Urban Policy Environments and Urban Food Security; Andrea Brown -- Conclusion: implications of a case study approach to African food deserts; Battersby & Crush -- Index.
This book investigates food security and the implications of hyper-urbanisation and rapid growth of urban populations in Africa. By means of a series of case studies involving African cities of various sizes, it argues that, while the concept of food security holds value, it needs to be reconfigured to fit the everyday realities and distinctive trajectory of urbanisation in the region. The book goes on to discuss the urban context, where food insecurity is more a problem of access and changing consumption patterns than of insufficient food production. In closing, it approaches food insecurity in Africa as an increasingly urban problem that requires different responses from those applied to rural populations.
