Since the opening of its doors to foreign direct investment (FDI) by Deng Xiaoping in 1978, China's economy has enjoyed unprecedented growth. Accompanying this economic growth have been concomitant changes in the Chinese law and legal environment, increased influence from Western and Japanese business as well as structural changes in the economy. These changes are driving change in the human resource management (HRM) practices in China. Moderating the pace and character of change has been the influence of China's culture. Some aspects of Chinese culture were repressed since the inception of the Peoples Republic of China, especially during the Cultural Revolution. However, with thousands of years of tradition, Chinese culture has had a slow resurgence within Chinese society, and has been a moderating force on the evolution of the law, and on the form of HRM practice.

The conceptual framework for this research shows the dynamics of the interaction between foreign direct investment, the economy, legal reform, and Chinese culture. Foreign direct investment has a stimulating effect on the Chinese economy, which in turn affects the pace and types of legal reform that is taking place in China. Likewise, foreign direct investment has an influence on the pace and types of legal reform as well. Chinese culture has had a moderating effect on both HRM as well as legal reform.

This dissertation explores the evolution in HRM. The trends in the changes in foreign direct investment, the economy, and legal reform, as well as the moderating influence of Chinese culture are examined as a means for providing a guide to the further evolution of HRM in China.
