Thesis (M.A.)--North Carolina Central University, 2018.
The purpose of this research is to show that Frederick Douglass's Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, My Bondage and My Freedom, and Life and Times of Frederick Douglass as well as his speeches influenced the creation of Octavia Butler's novel, Kindred. "The Influence of Frederick Douglass on Kindred" addresses the similarities that exist between Kindred and Douglass's works. "Recognizing the Patterns of the Patriarchal System," revisits the historical patriarchal slave system focusing on the power structure in the antebellum South. It also considers Frederick Douglass's involvement in the women's movement and his impact on women. "Slave, Invisible or Free: A Woman is a Woman," connects the women in Frederick Douglass's life and the women in Kindred. The claim is made that Octavia Butler's key women characters embody the women who influenced Douglass, and she gives them the voice that is missing from Douglass's narratives. The result of this research adds to the discussion that Frederick Douglass influenced the creation of Octavia Butler's novel Kindred because of his concern for the plight of women and his activist work for women's rights.
