First, experimental results of a high-temperature, Pb experiment demonstrating four-wave mixing using EIT at unity photon efficiency are presented. Next the relatively high-power Pb experiment is contrasted against two, cold-atom, EIT-based, low-light-level, nonlinear optical experiments. The cold, 87Rb medium for these experiments is prepared in a magneto-optical trap. The first experiment is a quantum interference optical switch where a pulse of light at one frequency causes the absorption of light at a second frequency. The second experiment demonstrates backward-wave, parametric down conversion. In the presence of pumping and coupling lasers, an anti-Stokes photon generates a phase-matched Stokes photon. Both cold-atom experiments use an energy per area of on the order of several photons per atomic cross section.

520 # $a The efficiency of a nonlinear optical process is determined by the interplay of the nonlinear and linear susceptibilities. As a laser is tuned near an atomic transition, the nonlinear susceptibility is resonantly enhanced while the rapidly increasing absorption renders the medium opaque. By using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), a destructive interference in absorption together with a constructive interference in the nonlinear susceptibility are simultaneously created which allows resonant enhancement of nonlinear optical processes. Additionally, photons on resonance with an atomic transition are of significant interested for coherent processing of quantum information. In this thesis, the characteristics of nonlinear optics using EIT are discussed with a focus on natural, transmission linewidths of EIT and slow group velocities of light.
