From the Salzburg Seminar to EAAS -- Making an Exhibition of Yourself: An American Occupation -- Making an Exhibition of Yourself: Founding the Free University Berlin -- Making an Exhibition of Yourself: Developing American Studies - an Opportunity to Define America in Berlin -- Amerika Institut - Munich -- The Founding of GAAS -- The Founding of BAAS.
Public diplomacy is conducted in a complex multi-hub and multi-directional network. In this environment, each interaction between members of the network has the potential to change the odds of a particular outcome occurring. As practitioners of public diplomacy work increasingly with digital media and social networks, they consciously increase the emphasis on partnership and cooperation, and the ability to identify factors that influence successful collaboration will continue to increase in importance. Collaborative Public Diplomacy places negotiation between network members at the centre of the analysis of public diplomacy. In doing so it identifies factors which can influence the success of public diplomacy in a network society, making it essential reading for scholars and practitioners alike.

"During the early Cold War, the complex relationship between communities in Europe and the United States was of concern to those on both sides of the Atlantic. Using archival research and recorded interviews, this book charts the development of American Studies in Europe during that period. It demonstrates how negotiations took place through a network of relationships among state bureaucracy, philanthropic foundations, and European scholars. Each interaction within this network had the potential to change the odds of a particular outcome occurring. Through analysis of these interactions, the book identifies factors which are influential in the conduct of successful collaborative public diplomacy and draws lessons for public diplomacy in an age when communities are connected through multi-hub, multi-directional networks"--
