In recent years, globalization has significantly affected our way of living. Consequently increasing numbers of interior designers are involved in international markets. Meanwhile, information regarding characteristics of international clients' preferences for interior environments is limited. During the last 15 years, the growth of China's economy provided a new market for the American design industry. To support these design activities, this investigation compared characteristics of Chinese preferences for visual attributes in interior environments to those of Americans.

Survey studies were conducted in both the United States and China. Scott designed a survey that provided preference ratings for photographic representations of 80 interior settings. The 80 interior settings (Scott, 1989) were shown to the subjects in the form of black and white slides and were evaluated on a 5-point Likert-type scale. The subjects were 321 American college students. The data were analyzed to generate preference patterns for visual attributes in interior environments. Scott's method and instruments were used in this study to conduct a similar survey in China. Data were collected from 312 college students in Kunming, China. The data collected in China were then compared with the data collected in the United States.

Using several theoretical perspectives, this study identifies similarities and differences between American and Chinese preferences for visual attributes in interior environments. Specifically, Berlyn's arousal theory and Kaplans' information model were used to study biological aspects of environmental preference, including the variables complexity, coherence, and environmental content. Also theories of environmental meaning were utilized to study social aspects of environmental preference, including the variables of interior environments, style and function.
