Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong (People's Republic of China), 2001.
This research aims at proposing participatory approaches in meeting the needs of the people in the context of the built environment by adapting proven western methodologies to suit the culturally, socially, and geo-politically unique society of Hong Kong. Rapid urbanization has brought with it alienation, anonymity, the loss of identity and a sense of belonging. The challenge for planners is how to accommodate more people while at the same time making such accommodation more affordable and livable. The research initiates and describes a method of study into the needs and aspirations of the general public with regard to their perception of the built environment and examines their responses towards different development patterns. The outcome is an outline methodology and a set of guidelines in participatory techniques that will provide professionals in the building industry, but planners and architects in particular, with a systematic approach in assessing the needs of the people on housing and urban planning issues. These guidelines could serve as a bridge for crossing from current traditional methodology to visionary and responsive strategies. The government can act upon them so as to develop a more comprehensive and democratic undertaking for the built environment in the early 21st century. It is anticipated that it will act as reference material for similar professions in Mainland China.
