In this dissertation I propose that law and theater are intimately connected, and I offer evidence from several French plays of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In reading plays such as Le Cid, Les Plaideurs, Le Tartuffe, and Le Mariage de Figaro, one may observe a criticism of the legal system. Characters' actions, speeches and even costumes can serve to represent, mock or reinforce the representation of the law on the stage. It is through the trial's visual form and theatrical qualities that the playwrights express their opinions on justice, politics and power. They provide commentary on the law and its impact on society as well as an opportunity for the audience to identify with the characters' struggles. The trial is easily represented on stage because it unfolds as drama. Though the interpretations of Law can vary, the trial process follows a preset order with a given set of rules and policies that require strict adherence; the same can be said about theater. For this reason the legal system was commonly portrayed in the past and remains a popular theme within the realms of literature and of visual entertainment today.
