The offline optimal solutions provide bounds on the performance of practical schedules, which must be online. Online scheduling algorithms are developed using a heuristic device called a "look-ahead buffer", which delays arriving packets by a certain amount to schedule them with optimal energy. It is observed that nearly optimal energy is attained, while the delay is predictable and almost constant. These properties, besides its simplicity and robustness to the data generation rate, make the online scheduling heuristic attractive for wireless data communication.

This work addresses the problem of energy-efficiently transmitting data that is generated discontinuously or at an unknown rate. It is motivated by the observation that there is a fundamental trade-off between minimizing transmission energy and minimizing packet delays. Such trade-offs do not arise in conventional treatments of wireless communication which assume that senders always have data to transmit or that data is generated continuously at a fixed, known rate.

We develop a model aimed at capturing the discreteness in the packet generation process. The centerpiece of the model is the assumption that the energy to transmit a packet is a convex, decreasing function of the transmission duration. We formulate the minimum-energy packet scheduling problem over a point-to-point link: data packets get generated at arbitrary times at the transmitter side, and the objective is to minimize the total energy to transmit all these packets within a finite deadline. The finite deadline constraint facilitates a closed-form solution of the offline problem as well as providing an indirect constraint on delay. The offline problem formulation is then extended to multiuser settings with and without time variation in the channel. An iterative algorithm that optimally solves all these problems as well as variations of those is presented.
