Because of the armies' losses in the summer of 1864, the peace faction enjoyed unprecedented strength and tremendous influence in the Democratic convention. The Copperheads' success there demonstrates that the peace wing was unlikely to overthrow the government violently, as earlier historians have argued, but would take it over the old-fashioned way: through the ballot box. Two days after the convention ended, Atlanta fell, thus disproving all that the Peace Democrats had claimed. Because of them, the party's reputation was tattered for years to come.

The antiwar movement was highly fluid. Issues and criticisms shifted over the course of the war in response to actions on the battlefield and in the halls of power. While some people took a position against the war and the Lincoln administration from the time the Confederates shelled Fort Sumter, the strength of Peace Democrats waxed and waned as the conflict unfolded. The power of the Copperheads---another name for the peace wing---was inextricably linked to the Union armies' successes and failures on the battlefield. When the military suffered setbacks, the Copperhead movement grew stronger; when the armies were victorious, it lost steam.

This dissertation examines antiwar sentiment in the North during the Civil War. Although the current historiography places Peace Democrats at the margins of political life, they were a very significant presence in many Northern communities and in nearly every state. From the time the war began, neighbors who supported or opposed the war regarded each other with deep suspicion. Fears were so intense in some places that people on both sides of the question were convinced that their neighbors were going to harm them or damage their property.

Union soldiers deeply resented the peace faction's argument that the war was a failure and that Lincoln should sue for peace. They believed such claims denied their own sacrifices, and hundreds of men wrote angry letters home denouncing the Copperheads and supporting the administration. Their influence may well have helped Abraham Lincoln maintain credibility with voters even when he was convinced he would not be re-elected.
