This dissertation examines the dramatic works of Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, Calderon de la Barca and other Spanish playwrights against the backdrop of Spain's political and social instability in the first half of the seventeenth-century. Contrary to the socio-critical interpretations of Jose Antonio Maravall and Jose Maria Diez Borque, which reduced the comedia to an instrument of monarchical propaganda, I argue that many plays during this period function as veiled, metaphorical critiques of the reigns of Philip III and Philip IV. The dramatic medium thus allowed these playwrights to safely join the chorus of voices advocating the need for imperial reform.
