How well is our confidence calibrated with our ability? Confidence calibration has traditionally been defined as a comparison between self-reported perceptions of performance and objective performance. This comparison has led to two major findings. The Lake Wobegon effect describes our general tendency towards overconfidence. This effect is moderated by the hard-easy effect in which we are particularly overconfident on hard tasks but are underconfident on easy tasks.

We propose an alternative method of measuring calibration that is based on a revealed measure of confidence. This new measure is derived from Signal Detection Theory and then applied in four experiments. The results show that the hard-easy effect can be reversed when self-confidence is based on a revealed rather than stated measure.
