In the first part of our study, we address two questions pertaining to WLANs. First, how do the wireless channel and system parameters (e.g., data rate, transmit power and packet size) impact the packet loss seen by the application? Second; how do we select system parameters to guarantee the "user-required QoS" and ensure energy consumption and channel time efficiency? To answer these questions, we develop packet error rate (PER) expressions for convolutional Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)-based WLANs operating in frequency-selective channels. These PER expressions provide an efficient method of estimating the PER given the channel conditions and system parameters and most importantly, they facilitate the study of the impact of packet loss on the application.

In the second part of this thesis, we address the issue of channel estimation in OFDM-based WMANs. Typical challenges in channel estimation in outdoor environments involve tracking the time-varying channel and noise reduction in the channel estimate. Hence, for these networks, we propose a low complexity pilot-based noise reduction filter. We evaluate the performance of this estimator and show its impact on VoIP and TCP-based data applications.

The PER results are applied to the study- of the impact of system parameters on the QoS for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)-based date applications over WLANs. using the insights derived from this study, we propose rate selection techniques that exploit the trade-off between the user's QoS and energy consumption or channel time, and an adaptive power loading algorithm for improving the user's QoS.

With the enormous demand for wireless access to the Internet for packet data and voice applications, Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) and Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (WMANs) are becoming ubiquitous. As is the case in all wireless networks, applications carried over these networks are subject to transmission errors and, consequently, packet loss which degrade the Quality of Service (QoS) perceived by a user. Packet loss can be mitigated by packet retransmissions, However resources such as energy consumption and the time spent on the channel by the user are increased.
