Includes bibliographical references and index.
Spain and Cuba: A very special relationship -- Washington, Havana, Brussels: collateral damage of a new Monroe Doctrine -- Brussels and Cuba: Persuasion and frustration -- Post-Franco Spain andCastro: A bipartisan democracy deals with a Marxist regime -- Waiting for Fidel and Raul: Resignation and expectation -- Conclusion: dilemmas and options.
Fifty years after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution and the establishment of a Marxist-Leninist regime in Cuba, the two fundamental dimensions of this historical phenomenon are the survival of the system created by Fidel Castro and the policy of the United States to terminate it. Less knownis the relationship of Cuba with other international actors. Most especially there is a certain vacuum in the literature dedicated to the link between Cuba and Europe and most specifically with some prominent European states, Spain in the lead. And the same time, even less studied, is the connection with the collective body known as the European Union (UE). This book reflects on this fascinating quadrangular relationship in the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.
