In The Law of Nations in Political Thought, Charles Covell examines the law of nations as this subject figures in the work of the followingpolitical theorists and jurists: Vitoria, Suarez, Gentili, Grotius, Hobbes, Pufendorf, Wolff, Vattel, Locke, Hume, Bentham, Rousseau, Kant and Hegel. The discussion is organized around the critical exposition of the major writings of the political and legal thinkers concerned. In this way, it is explained how the thinkers developed the established currents of theorizing as focused on the ideas of natural law and the just war and how, in doing so, they came to play a decisive role in the elaboration of the principles that are central to the law of nations in itsmodern form and tradition. The result is a study that contributes to the understanding of the conceptual and normative foundations of the contemporary system of international law and the contemporary order of international relations.
