The objectives of this study are: (a) To determine the life adjustment for newly immigrated women in Kinmen, and (b) To ascertain the factors contributing to domestic violence in the family of new female immigrants. In this study, a qualitative research method was applied, and with means of purposive sampling, four social workers in DVPCC were interviewed with a semi-structured questionnaire. The findings of this study show that factors contributing to domestic violence against new female immigrants include: (1) adjustment difficulties to new circumstances; (2) language communication obstacles; (3) interaction problems between the female immigrant and her mother-in-law; (4) husband with heavy drinking problems; (5) valuation discrepancy in money and economic issues; (6) male chauvinism; (7) husband sexual assault; (8) suspicion of the new female immigrant having affairs; (9) inconsistency in attitudes toward child raising; and (10) cultural differences. These are the major problems encountered by new immigrant women.According to this study, victims of domestic violence (among new female immigrants) experience the following phases: (1) Denial: believing that her husband didn’t do it on purpose; (2) Justifying and rationalizing of the abuse; and (3) Endurance. When the violence was repeated, the victim would then enter the following phases: (1) Anger; (2) Feelings of sadness, fear, and betrayal; (3) Considering or attempting to commit suicide; and (4) Endurance and expectations for the abuser to change. The findings of this study indicate that new female immigrants who are abused need the following types of assistance from the government: (1) Language translation service; (2) Legal advice plans; (3) Services relating to new female immigrants; (4) Regulations of the abuser; (5) Financial assistance; and (6) An employment program. In conclusion, this study proposes two suggestions toward social workers: (1) to strengthen professional knowledge; and (2) to emphasize and reinforce domestic violence prevention education.
