Shakespeare in Transition investigates the political dimensions of Czech Shakespeare appropriation and production in the wake of the fall of Communism in 1989. Whether in focusing on recent arguments about Shakespeare translation (zooming in on an explosive public debate where inaccurate Shakespeare translation was equated with 'treason against Czech national culture') or comparative consideration of clusters of themed performances, Kostihov persuasively demonstrates that Shakespeare takes a leading role in refracting contemporary hot-button political issues -such as new legislation on gender, sexuality, and domestic abuse -that aim to redefine the normative boundaries of postcommunist citizenship.
