After two decades of research into the impact of the EU on domestic politics and policies, this book explores the relationship between Europeanization and EU integration. It argues that Europeanization should be considered as a stage in the development of EU integration as well as questioning the notion of incremental Europeanization. The scope and extent of Europeanization among the member states of the European Union is all too often exaggerated by scholars of European integration. It has long been assumed that the mere existence of mechanisms designed to promote commonality between countries in the EU and to encourage a collective European identity has given credence to the idea of Europeanization and how effectively it has infiltrated EU member states. In stark contrast to the assumed success of these mechanisms in promoting Europeanization, recent studies have shown that, in the main, both domestic socio-economic as well as normative structures have proved resilient to this process. Through a compelling exploration of the relationship between European integration and Europeanization, this collection provides important insights into the disconnect between efforts to promote commonality and collective European identity and the ambivalent results of Europeanization at the socio-economic and normative structures of member states.

While processes of European integration and of Europeanization are inevitably intertwined, the relation between the two has been notably understudied. This exemplary volume provides a most welcome contribution to the literature and prepares the ground for the next cycle of more 'integrated' Europeanization studies. - Maarten Vink, Co-Director of EUDO Citizenship and Department of Politics, Maastricht university, the Netherlands and Robert Schumann Centre for Advanced Studies, European University Insitute, Italy This edited volume addresses the missing link between Europeanization and European integration theories. It provides a crucial platform for dialogue between the two, taking into account the intricacies that develop in the multi-layered interaction between the European Union and its Member States. It is therefore, timely and informative, becoming an excellent springboard for scholars and students alike to engage in this emerging debate. Theofanis Exadaktylos, School of Politics, University of Surrey, UK Europeanization - or how member-states change (or not) at what speeds in which ways in which areas in response to which pressures from European integration, and how these responses in turn affect the EU - is the topic of this must-read book. It takes us to a new level of understanding of the relationship between Europeanization and European integration, and as such represents a major contribution to the field of European studies. Vivien A. Schmidt, Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration and Director, Center for the Study of Europe, Boston University, USA.
